in the Classroom

Benefits, Implementation, and Strategies

Modelled reading involves the teacher reading a text aloud to students, demonstrating skilled reading behaviour and allowing teachers to showcase their enjoyment of reading. This helps students see the purpose in learning to read.
 Importance of Modelled Reading:

  • Develops students' understanding of reading and provides a background of text experiences for independent reading.
  • Allows teachers to model good reading behaviours and familiarise students with linguistic and visual features of text.

    Benefits of Modelled Reading:
  • Develops students' appreciation and understanding of literature and the skills required for reading.
  • Helps construct mental images and introduces unfamiliar vocabulary, complex sound-letter patterns, and different text genres.
  • Stimulates critical thinking and motivation for reading.

    Benefits of Modelled Reading:
    Text Selection -
    Choose an appropriate text:
  • · A text that goes beyond students' current reading abilities, keeping in mind the teaching purpose, student interest, and challenges for learning. ·
  •  A text that demonstrates connections, enhances phonological awareness, develops fluency, and introduces new vocabulary. ·
  •  A text with varying complexity, different writing styles, and abstract concepts.

Introduction and Reading - Introduce the text by discussing the author, title and content points. Then, read the text aloud, modelling fluency, phrasing, and intonation. Encourage students to engage with the storyline or content.

Engaging Students - Model strategies used by efficient readers
  1. Think aloud about the text, making predictions and connections to prior knowledge.

'Think -Alouds' are purposeful interruptions during reading. These include questions like :

  • What do I know about this topic?
  • Did I understand what I just read?
  • What were the most important points ?
  • What new information did I learn?
  • How can I understand this better?
  • How does it connect to what I already know?
    2. Ask questions, comment on answers, and use self-correction strategies.

Post-Reading Discussion -

  • Encourage critical thinking, reflection, and sharing of different interpretations by inviting students to respond to the text and discuss what they have heard.
  • Extend understanding and link prior knowledge to new concepts and information.

Modelled reading is a fundamental part of daily reading programs, building students' understanding, fostering a love for literature, and equipping them with reading skills and strategies.
