Embracing the Importance of Non-Fiction: Using "Deep Water"- XII as
an Example for Understanding

1. Connect Non-Fiction to Real Life: Demonstrate how non-fiction texts relate to students' lives, providing practical examples and applications.
Example @Deep Water - Discuss the psychological aspects of fear and how it relates to real-life situations and personal experiences. Explore the real-life dangers and risks that parallel the experiences of the protagonist in "Deep Water."

2. Relate Non-Fiction to Fiction: Make connections between non-fiction and related fictional stories, highlighting the value of factual knowledge.
Example @Deep Water - Discuss the fear characters in familiar stories might have felt These could be from IX/ X or XI.I often make popular fables or fairy stories a starting point. For example - The fear the seagull experienced (His First Flight, X) / The fear in "We're not Afraid To Die..., XI. The discussion could be on the similarity or difference, how was the fear overcome and comparison or contrast therein and so on.

3. Collaborative Discussions and Activities: Engage students in group discussions and activities to analyse and share insights from non-fiction readings.
Example @Deep Water - Engage students in group discussions to analyse the psychological aspects of fear and its impact on decision-making - How it makes us balk / fight or flight / makes the mind go blank / facing our fear

4. Real-World Applications: Emphasise how non-fiction reading skills are applicable to various careers and everyday decision-making.
Example @Deep Water - Douglas overcame his fear once he understood that he had to face it.  Use this example to explain that understanding fear and risk can be valuable in personal decision-making and facing challenges.

5. Incorporate Project-Based Learning: Assign projects or research tasks based on non-fiction texts to encourage practical application of knowledge.
Example @Deep Water - Assign projects where students research and present on topics related to extreme sports, psychology of fear, or survival techniques.
For example -A survey for 20 students of classes IX-XII about their fear. The learning is in the creation of the questionnaire because the students think critically to create questions in order to elicit the responses they'd like to study.

6. Utilise Technology: Integrate online platforms and educational apps to make non-fiction reading interactive and engaging. Incorporate multimedia tools like videos, podcasts, and articles to enhance the non-fiction reading experience.
Example @Deep Water - Integrate videos or documentaries about  real-life survival stories.

7. Connect with External Resources: Bring in guest speakers or organise virtual visits to provide real-world perspectives on non-fiction topics.
Example @Deep Water - Could invite guest speakers  to share their insights with students. These could be commonplace professionals who are successful at what they do but have had to face fears.

8. Celebrate Non-Fiction Success: Recognise and reward students' achievements in non-fiction reading to motivate further exploration.
Example @Deep Water - Celebrate students' achievements in understanding the non-fiction aspects of "Deep Water" by having a fun activity like a relay quiz, some art, crossword, title-sharing, mini- awards etc.
